ABOUT RICKY FM LAW & SUNSHINE SENIORS

Ricky FM Law founded Sunshine Seniors in 2022 to empower older adults to lead meaningful, productive lives rather than be seen as passive recipients.

Under his leadership, members share their K.E.N.T.—knowledge, experience, networks and time to benefit themselves and the wider community.

Through member-led initiatives, government programs and academic collaborations, Ricky creates spaces for seniors to learn, connect and take the lead. Activities include birthday celebrations, the IMDA-supported Sunshine Voice digital literacy programme and a study on purposeful living with the Singapore University of Social Sciences. These activities not only promote health and well-being, but also help seniors feel confident in shaping their own journeys.

These efforts help seniors remain connected and visible in society, therefore encouraging them stay engaged, relevant and empowered to make a difference in society.

Can you share your journey as a changemaker – and what has kept you motivated to continue?

I never planned to be a changemaker. Sunshine Seniors began from a simple question after leaving my corporate career: “Are seniors really a burden?”

I realised that today’s seniors are healthier, educated and financially stable, and have so much to contribute. Sunshine Seniors was started to change the narrative around ageing and give an opportunity for older adults to live with purpose.

What drives me is seeing them rediscover their value, whether as leaders, facilitators or supporters.

“Ageing doesn’t mean stepping back; it means stepping into new ways of living meaningfully.” – Ricky FM Law

What kind of change are you trying to create, and who does it impact the most?

I aim to change mindsets about ageing. Too often, it’s seen as decline, but I tell people: “We are not expired milk. We are vintage wine.”

Sunshine Seniors impacts older adults most, helping them to reconnect with their value and purpose as social circles shrink or confidence wanes. By focusing on what they can do, seniors regain their personal sense of pride, joy and a sense of contribution.

I don’t force change – I share the sunshine narrative, and those who resonate walk the journey with me.

“I don’t support the disconnection of saying ‘I’m old but young at heart.’ Accept your age, and find strength within it.” – Ricky FM Law

What challenges have you faced in your changemaking journey, and how did you overcome them?

I haven’t faced major challenges because I deliberately keep things simple – no KPIs, no numbers, no growth pressures, just doing what feels meaningful. Our gatherings are self funded, and platforms like Facebook help us stay connected without stress

While I’ve explored funding, I value the freedom and joy of Sunshine Seniors above all. If support comes with flexibility, I welcome it – but I won’t compromise the spirit that makes our community what it is.

“I’m here for the pleasure of doing, not the pleasure of delivering.” – Ricky FM Law

Who or what has made your changemaking journey possible?

The answer is simple: myself.

it began with a moment of reflection – feeling a little lost after my travels – and the spark to “do something.”

From there, I leaned on my own skills to start Sunshine Seniors on Facebook, and slowly our community grew from 500 members to thousands.

Recognition from programs like Alibaba-SUSS and IMDA, along with media coverage, further expanded our reach.

How has this journey changes you personally, and what are your hopes for the future?

For me, growth isn’t about chasing KPIs or numbers – it’s about reaching more seniors and helping them engage meaningfully. With the right platform and audience, I can share Sunshine Senior’s principles, answer questions and inspire participation. Those who feel connected will join, and those who don’t, won’t – and that’s perfectly fine.

My dream is to grow the community to around 10,000 members, creating a strong base to eventually bring the model to other ageing societies like Japan, Korea or my hometown, Hong Kong. For now, all I need are platforms and opportunities to share, connect and inspire others.

SG60 Series: Stories of Giving and Community Spirit

The SG60 Series is a storytelling and research initiative that reimagines philanthropy by spotlighting how everyday individuals, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, are powerful changemakers in their own right.

We examine the challenges they face, the enablers that support them, and the impact they create. These insights offer ecosystem enablers a valuable opportunity to explore how they can better empower changemakers and catalyse grassroots action. Above all, the stories affirm that anyone can be a changemaker in their own way.

We are deeply grateful to all the changemakers who generously shared their journeys with us.
